Gratitude: The Most Rapid Return

Return on investment? Yes, I know that it’s a bit obnoxious of me to use a financial term for a spiritual concept, but here at Monalle, we don’t like to draw that old line, “Money bad – Love Good”. If your heart is in the right place, there really is no reason not to use a financial term when regarding spiritual concepts, now is there?

So what do I mean when I say return on investment? After all, we’re talking about gratitude here, there really is no actual investment now is there?

Gratitude is a two way street

We, the general we here referring to all the high minded peace loving benevolent critters reading this, don’t like to admit that Personal Development is actually a Self Serving, Self Centered art form. Sure, in order to make your life the best it can be you’re going to end up helping and benefiting everyone you encounter as much as possible, but at the end of the day – it’s going to be you who gets the biggest reward from all the efforts you put forth.

That’s the return. The investment is whatever you put out there into the world. Mostly we are speaking in terms of Time and Energy here. We use money to invest in businesses; we use time and energy to invest in the world… The return then, is pretty much always going to be when that time and energy bounces back onto you.

The Inverse Golden Rule

“Others will do unto you as you have done unto them.” That’s the return of all that time and energy you put out. If you invest your time and energy in cheating people, or hustling them, guess what you will get in return. But if you invest your energies in humbly helping and benefiting others, guess what you get in return…

Now back to gratitude. We did Honor a few weeks ago, and you spent a whole week practicing honoring the people around you. You discovered that they lit up, and in just a few days people were more excited to see you, more eager to be around you, and generally it was a pretty rewarding week.

Wait ‘til you try gratitude! You are going to be blown away at how fast this one comes back at you…

It’s so dramatic and powerful, none of the 52 essences bounce back as fast or as strong. People LOVE to be appreciated. You’ll see. This week we are going to be focusing on how to target that Gratitude and a few of the places where you can practice it that may not be so obvious…

For Today

For now, I’m not going to sing the praises of gratitude, or tell you what the idea itself means, instead I’m just going to give you the daily exercise and let you feel it. If you do this practice, you will be amazed at the the immediate effects it has on the people around you.

Today you are going to express gratitude to ten people. These are really easy to get, so you are going to shoot for a lot of them. Ten should be enough to keep you actively grateful all day…

No shortcuts! Do it for real if you want the real effect. It isn’t enough to just say “Thanks” when someone holds a door open for you. That’s too easy. We are looking for actual heartfelt gratitude. To ANYONE!

Let me give you a little headstart with two phrases you can probably use five times each to get your ten:

1. At any store anywhere you frequent say: “You always have such a nice warm smile when I come in here, it makes me feel welcome. I want to thank you for that.”

2. To anyone close to you: “I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it lately, but I really appreciate the way you…”

It’s so easy. Make sure too drink in the way they light up… The immediate return is available in the sparkle of their eyes… But give it 24 hours after you gave them some honest gratitude and see what happens, you’ll be amazed!

All my best! See you tomorrow!
