Continuous People

What the heck are continuous people?

Lat week I had the good fortune to attend Author 101 University in Las Vegas… It was a 4 day long mega conference with over 25 speakers and 300 people in attendance…

If you’re a Monalle regular, you probably know that I write books (that’s what pays the bills around here)… You also probably know that I’m a huge fan of learning, improving, and sculpting our crafts to the best of our abilities…

You may not know however, that I’m working on my biggest project ever and to help kick it off right I decided to attend Rick Frishman’s Author 101 conference…

There’s a few things that make Author 101 a somewhat special conference –

Frist – Host Rick Frishman insists that all the speakers spend their whole weekend at the conference… No, “Speak and Go” at Author 101, instead it’s “Speak and Meet People” all weekend long…

Second – > It’s 80% classes and learning, 20% Combine… “What’s a ‘Combine’?” you may ask… A combine is when you take talent (in this case ‘Authors’ but they have Combines in all sorts of fields) and you lock them in a room with agents, scouts, and team owners (in this case publishers)…

Combining with the Best of the Best

As an author I was there two learn as much as possible, meet as many people as possible, and take full advantage of the Combine aspect that occurred twice each day…

Now, back to the concept of Continuous People… Now I know I was supposed to be listening to all the top agents, publishers, and bestselling authors and learning as much as possible from them, and I did!

But there were two people there who taught me something way more valuable than anything I learned on stage: It was Rick and Robbi Frishman, and the lesson they gave me was something I wanted to share with you all… It was very much in tune with a quote from Emerson I adore:

“Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear what you are saying”
Emerson

See, Rick and Robbi taught me something by simply being who they are, it was / is the lesson of being “Continuous People”

What it means is this: “Are you the same person with everyone you meet? Do you treat all people with the same courtesy, dignity & respect regardless of their place in the world?” That is what ‘continuous people’ do…

They are continues on and off the stage, they don’t change faces when they are talking to hugely financially successful investors, or just chatting with their waitress… They stay the same, continuous with everyone they meet…

Being Continuous

Everyone preaches being genuine, but it’s really easy to fall into the trap of giving a little extra attention and energy to those people who can help our careers and lives… Who doesn’t treating their boss a little better than their employees? Who doesn’t listen more attentively when the President of the company wants our attention than when the janitor wants to tell us about their weekend…

That’s what being a ‘continuous person’ is all about. It’s about treating everyone the same, all the time… Giving that employee the same respect and dignity you would give the President of the company… Seeing past the roles we play in society and simply seeing people as people… and treating everyone well…

I think I’m pretty good at, I think I treat everyone the same, I sure try to! But when you see a true a master of it, it’s really a special and beautiful thing…

Rick and Robbi Frishman are true masters of it, the sort of people who make you feel on top of the world by the way they really listen and care about what you’re saying… and they naturally do it with everyone they meet…

So today, I just wanted to share what I learned from them and challenge you to look at yourself: Are you a continuous person?
